TNBC: improve infrastructures at KIA for better horticultural returns

THE executive secretary of the Tanzania National Business Council (TNBC), Dunstan Mrutu, has called upon the Government in Dar to revamp and otherwise improve the infrastructure at the country's second largest international airport (after the coastal Julius Nyerere Airport in Dar), the Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania (KIA).

KIA is central to the Northern Tourist Circuit which boasts such internationally-renown attractions like Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, as well as the international conference facilities which have rechristened  Arusha as the Geneva of Africa.

THE permanent secretary in the Tanzania ministry of Agriculture, Food Security & Cooperatives, Mohamed Muya, says plans are in hand which would enable the horticulture sub-sector to boost Government revenues to the tune of US$1 billion  over the next five years. That sum is roughly the equivalent of Tsh1.356 trillion, or Ksh76 billion.

All this is in concerted efforts involving various stakeholders to bring the country's horticultural industry to par with Kenya's, which in the regional leader in the horticultural stakes.

Kenya currently collects Tsh3 trillion from its flower exports despite the fact that it has less arable land than Tanzania.

SOME of the major commercial banks in Tanzania should have no reason to quarrel with the description of their portfolios performance in the first quarter of this year as 'difficult.' This is especially if we take profits as a benchmark in performance stakes... Their after-tax profits fell, compared with the profits they earned in the last Quarter of 2009!

IF there is a moment I cherish most at the end of each day, it’s that time I take my dinner at ‘Mama nitilie’s joint.  The best thing about having my meal there, apart from saving me from the agony of cooking, is that the cost of the food is affordable. Here, I get the chance of meeting and talking with different people.
